 VRHS Valedictorian and Salutatorian



Congratulations to Laiken Mourovic (right) who was named VRHS Class of 2010 Valedictorian and Ty Redding (left) who was named VRHS Class of 2010 Salutatorian.  They were recently recognized at the Carroll County Board of Education Valedictorian / Salutatorian breakfast for all of their hard work and academic success during their tenure at VRHS.

 Earth Day Activities
On Thursday April 22nd, Mr. Vick’s marketing class made sales presentations. In honor of Earth Day, all products “sold” to the class had to be “green”. Products were varied and innovative. Included were ideas for power generated from household waste water, hydrogen cell sport boats, and the recycling of paper products and tennis shoes. Students enjoyed the presentations and learned the value of our planet along with their sales techniques.

In Mrs. Dunbar’s classes, they researched an endangered species and created awareness by acquiring signatures from teachers and staff after they explained about the species, its habitat, and why it is endangered. They created a button with a picture of their species on it.
 Chemistry Goes Tie-Dyed



After completing units on solutions and acids and bases, the Chemistry classes of Mrs. Hasbun and Mrs. Zwingmann created their own tie-dyed shirts.  Pictured are Chemistry students displaying various tie-dyed styles.

 Five Wildcats Named to JSU Honor Band



Villa Rica High School has five students (left to right, Kelsey Wood, Anthony Foote, Taylor Davis, Shannon Scott, and Kevin Dunham) who have been selected to participate in the Jacksonville State University Honor Band May 6-8, 2010.  The 27th Annual Southerners' Honor Band Festival Program includes nationally acclaimed guest conductors, one high school Wind Ensemble, and two equal high school Symphonic Bands.  These students will rehearse for many hours and conclude the Honor Band with concerts on Saturday, May 8th, on the campus of JSU.

 Special Olympics Winning Wildcats



Congratulations to the Wildcat athletes above who brought home medals from the Special Olympics held April 15th at Carrollton High School.  Our winning Wildcats are (left to right) James Stephens (2nd place in the 100m Dash, 3rd place in the Softball Throw), Jamal Taylor (2nd place in the 50m Dash, 3rd place in the Softball Throw), Katie Russell (2nd place in the 100m Dash, 2nd place in the Softball Throw), Kevin Lowe (2nd place in the 50m Dash, 1st place in the Softball Throw), Kenya Cousins (1st place in the 100m Dash, 1st place in the Softball Throw), Rachael Cox (1st place in the Running Long Jump, 1st place in the Softball Throw), Rafael Ramos (1st place in the 50m Dash, 3rd place in the Softball Throw), Julian Hatmaker (2nd place in the 100m Dash, 2nd place in the Softball Throw), Ashley Phillips (3rd place in the Running Long Jump, 3rd place in the Softball Throw), and Demon Redwine (1st place in the 100m Dash, 1st place in the Shot Put).  Congratulations, Wildcats!!!

 Destiny Erwin is our STAR Student



We are pleased to announce that Destiny Erwin has been named our 2009-10 PAGE STAR student. To obtain the STAR nomination, Destiny had the highest score in one sitting on the SAT taken through December of 2009. Destiny has named Cindy Hardegree as her STAR teacher.  Young Georgia Authors



Congratulations to Courtney Remillard (right) and Hannah Hurst (left).  These two young ladies have been named the system-wide winners in their respective grades in the 2010 Young Georgia Authors’ Writing Competition.  Courtney’s winning entry was titled “To Be a Young Soldier” while Hannah’s was titled “Windows”.

 NGA Wildcats Represent VRHS at Workshop



The Carrollton Civic Woman's Club sponsored the Community Leadership Education Workshop (CLEW) in March for potential community leaders representing area high schools.  The event was held at the First United Methodist Church in Carrollton. Villa Rica High School was represented by NGA students (left to right) Hunter Smith, Carlie Roberson, Jeffrey Jones, Jr., Myah Long and Chelse Brown.

Congratulations to our 2010 Miss Wildcat, Alicia Nelson.  First runner-up was Breanna Lee Hall, second runner-up was Brianna Thompson, third runner-up was Rosa Perez, and Miss Congeniality was Brianna Thompson.  Congratulations to all of the wonderful young ladies who participated, and congratulations to the VRHS Beta Club for putting together a great pageant and restoring one of VRHS's proud traditions.  Lauren Seals, our 2008 Miss Wildcat, places the crown on our reigning Miss Wildcat in the photo above, while all of this year's winners strike a pose below (left to right):  Rosa Perez, Alicia Nelson, Brianna Thompson, and Breanna Lee Hall.

 Congratulations to the VRHS Literary Team


Congratulations to the Villa Rica High School Literary Team for placing 3rd in the Region 5AAAA meet Saturday, March 13th.  Gage Lindsay took 1st place in Boys Dramatic Interpretation, and he will now go on to compete in the State Literary Meet Saturday, March 20th. 
Kim Pigate took 4th place in Girls Dramatic Interpretation; Laiken Mourovic placed 4th and Ross Walker placed 2nd in the Essay Contest;  Max Dubois took 3rd for the boys and Katie McClendon took 2nd for the girls in Extemporaneous Speaking; and Destiny Erwin, Shantrice Laura and Diamond Brown placed 3rd in Girls Trio.  Pictured above are (front row, left to right) Kim Pigate, Laiken Mourovic, Katie McClendon, Destiny Erwin, and Shantrice Laura; (back row, left to right) Max Dubois, Gage Lindsay, and Ross Walker.

 VRHS Wrestling Awards


The VRHS Wrestling Banquet was held March 16th where the team enjoyed a nice meal provided by Coach Fuller, who then presented awards for the 2009 - 2010 season.  Senior Daniel Finni (171 lbs.) and freshman Josh Ivey (103 lbs.) were both presented with the Times-Georgian All Area Wrestling Team Awards, and Daniel was also recognized for finishing 4th in Region 5-AAAA and qualifying for the State Wrestling Tournament.  Shown above are (left to right) Daniel Finni, Assistant Coach Kyle Sealey, Josh Ivey, and Head Coach Steve Fuller.

 2010 Miss Wildcat Pageant



Eighteen girls will vie for the coveted title of Miss Wildcat 2010 this Saturday, March 13th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Villa Rica High School Gymnasium.  Tickets are $5 at the door; please come and support your favorite contestant.  The young ladies competing are (front row, left to right) Deanna Collins, Miracle Martinez, Jamie Chism, Jessica Cecilio, Ashley McPherson, Breanna Hall, Julia Anne Key, and Shemeka Mosely;  (back row, left to right) Alicia Nelson, Brianna Thompson, Paulina Vizcarra, Shanequa Ross, Elice Breeden, Camilla Koep, Kim Pigate, and Hannah Seals.  Not Pictured: Frances Perez, Rosa Perez.

 FCCLA Visits the Capitol



Family, Career and Community Leaders of America offers opportunities to develop leadership throughout the year.  In June, students attended the FFA-FCCLA Center for Summer Leadership Camp.  At this camp, students participated in activities such as softball, crafts, leadership training, hunter safety, archery, swimming and much more.  In July, Victoria Winters attended the National FCCLA Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tennessee.  The Fall Leadership Conference was held in September at the FFA-FCCLA Centers.  Villa Rica High had two members to attend this weekend training.  The state Motivational Rally was held at the Georgia National Fair in Perry, Georgia in October.  Victoria Winters attended the National Cluster Meeting in Louisville, Kentucky in November.  On Tuesday, February 9th, Villa Rica High School attended the Georgia FCCLA Day at the Capitol.  They are now making plans to attend the State Leadership Meeting in Athens.

 11th Grade Lit at Work
Ms. Benoskie, Mr. Berryhill, and Mrs. Walker's 11th Grade Literature classes enjoyed a unique grammar lesson while reviewing and preparing for the English Language Arts portion of the Georgia High School Graduation Test. The students were divided into teams that competed in races to form grammatically correct sentences using cards representing all 8 parts of speech. The lesson not only reinforced the use of the different parts of speech, but also gave students the opportunity to work together in a friendly competition setting.

 Scott Named Winner in 2009 CSO Young Composer Competition

 


Congratulations to Shannon Scott who was named a winner in the 2009 Carroll Symphony Orchestra Young Composer Competition.  Each year, CSO sponsors this event in which Conductor and Musical Director Terry Lowry submits a theme to every music, band, and chorus teacher in Carroll County, and they in turn encourage students to write a short composition based on the theme.  Shannon is a sophomore at VRHS where she participates in the music program under the direction of Ms. Robbin Harry, and she is a piano student of Mr. Neil Pollack.  She is also a member of PHUMC and sings in the youth choir.  Shannon received an Honorable Mention for her entry in last year's competition.  While she does enjoy playing the trombone under the guidance of Ms. Harry, Shannon says that her favorite class this year is AP Music Theory with Ms. Sarah Parker.

This year Villa Rica High School is offering for the first time a Forensic Science class. Students in this class learn how to apply what they’ve learned in their science classes to a legal or investigative situation. Recently they’ve been studying the physics of blood spatter. Here’s just a peak into what they’ve been up to!
 Brooke Shadrix Crowned VRHS Homecoming Queen
 

 Congratulations to Brooke Shadrix who was crowned VRHS's Homecoming Queen and to Zach Bearden who was crowned Homecoming King on a cold, misty Homecoming Night that concluded a week of spirit-filled activities for the Wildcats.  Students participated in dress-up days, fence decorating competitions, the Homecoming Parade, and finally the Homecoming Dance which followed the Wildcats' exciting 32 - 29 victory over the Douglas County Tigers.  Congratulations also go out to the Class of 2010 who emerged victorious in the Homecoming Week competitions.
